Spotlight is an award-winning website made for the Australian Bureau of Statistics by Leo Burnett Sydney to show 2006 Census data in an engaging, immersive and interactive way. This was achieved by designing a website that generated a personalised infographic, and providing fun facts and commentary along the way. Right from the outset, the ABS and Leo Burnett Sydney were committed to building a great experience for people who rely on assistive technology. To do this, a comprehensive strategy and set of best practices were put in place to ensure that all audiences were catered for. Spotlight was a resounding success and provided a strong case for the ability of an agency to build great looking but accessible websites. This presentation will cover the steps the ABS and Leo Burnett Sydney took early on to make the development of Spotlight smooth and efficient, how they went beyond the technical requirements of WCAG 2 to build a tailored accessible solution, and some key learnings and insights that were found.
